Who should attend?

If you are in the pre-data analysis phase, Stats Camp staff will engage with you to develop a testable research hypothesis, a fully articulated analysis plan, and ensure full understanding of the analysis model, the nature of its results, and their implications.

If you are in the analysis phase, Stats Camp staff will work with you to learn the software syntax needed to analyze your data, interpret the output and understand the implications of your findings.

Breakout sessions will cover a vast array of techniques and topics. Some topics are predetermined while others will be prepared specifically to meet your needs and the needs of the other participants (a survey will be given prior to the event to develop this need list of topics to cover).

What to expect from the Stats Camp experience?

Participants in our first annual Stats Camp Analysis Retreat were overwhelming positive about the individualized learning that took place as well as the opportunity to work with their own data – a practical aspect that makes learning easier. Because participants are enabled to ask questions and get immediate feedback, learning the practical analytic skills is facilitated. Also, participants learned about different topics tailored to their learning needs. As seen in the daily schedule, much time is provided to network and socialize, enabling participants to also learn from each other.

Participants uniformly exclaimed that the learning activities contributed to publishing more articles and increasing the quality of their research, which has allowed them to target higher impact factor journals. Because quantitative methods are a critical gap in most fields, the Stats Camp experience helped clarify the essential importance of quantitative methods. By learning the basics of applying these methods, the knowledge is thereby carried over to other colleagues and students, and ultimately helping to close the gap.

  • 8:00 – Group Breakfast with kick-off discussion.
  • 9:00 – Morning break-out sessions in two groups based on whether there is a clear analysis plan (group 1: already working on analyses – group 2: preparing for data analysis).
    • For both groups the goal is to answer questions like:
      • What exactly is your research question?
      • What are your testable research hypotheses?
      • What analysis plan is best suited for you hypotheses?
      • Make/review drawings of your model (observed/latent)
  • 12:00 – Group Lunch with small group discussions and networking
  • 1:30 – Afternoon break-out session with mini-lectures (conversations) on statistical models; choose from:
    • Longitudinal Modeling: Design, Measurement, Analysis

The analysis retreat at Whitefish was the most useful workshop I’ve ever been part of–due to its flexibility and amount of personal attention. Every day there were presentations on specific topics that one could choose to attend or not. Those not attending continued to work on their analyses with plenty of expert consultation available. My highlight of the winter break was attending ‘Stats Camp,’ an educational camp that provides advanced-level training in Statistics. I took Foundations of SEM and Longitudinal SEM last summer (2016), and I have to say this has been one of the most useful learning experiences of my life. The courses were excellent! Everything was explained in a clear fashion with plenty of time for questions and practice. Learning was fun and the teaching happened at multiple levels, such that everyone would have a lot of knowledge gain regardless of their level of expertise. For example, I had taken SEM in grad school, but I still found the foundations of SEM course extremely useful, because it allowed me to deepen my understanding and learn new things. I can strongly recommend Katherine Masyn’s week long course in Longitudinal Mixture Modeling. It is as systematic and comprehensive as the very best of the research methods courses I have participated in since I moved from business to academics 12 years ago. The roster of eminent professors I have been luck enough to enjoy and who have literally propelled my academic career forward includes, David Harrison on Introduction to Research Design, Paul Allison on Longitudinal Fixed Effects Regression, Rens van de Schoot on Bayesian Estimation, William Crano on Quasi-Experimental Design, and Bengt Muthen (himself), on a bit of everything! In addition to being an excellent teacher, I believe Katherine’s Latent Class Analysis and Transition Analysis material to be a really important, yet nuanced, tool box for pulling apart differing effects in subpopulations for the coming generation of social and behavioral science researchers, starting now!
